About the Speakers
Leonard Achan, a member of the Adelphi University Board of Trustees, is the Chief Innovation Officer at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in NYC after a more than 15-year career at Mount Sinai Health System where he held a variety of roles spanning clinical, operational, financial and strategic communications and business development.
Achan landed his first role at Mount Sinai while still a student at Adelphi. In 1998 he applied to and was accepted by Mount Sinai to complete his senior practicum and was then hired full-time as a clinical nurse after graduating with his nursing degree from Adelphi in 1999. He left Mount Sinai earlier this year and joined HSS to develop their Innovation Institute and commercialize HSS knowledge by building and partnering with inventors and companies to scale innovation at no better place than the number one muscular skeletal health organization in the world.
During his tenure at Mount Sinai, Achan served in various roles within business development and operations, functioning as an entrepreneur responsible for building new departments and initiatives. He most recently served as Chief Communications Officer of Mount Sinai and built the health system’s first-ever department of digital and social media. Within 24 months, it was ranked top five in the nation. Achan was also tasked with restructuring the system’s traditional marketing and communications, public relations and crisis management departments for the entire health system and the Icahn School of Medicine as a Sr. Associate Dean, making them a national leader in organic press within 24 months. He was also responsible for the planning and implementation of Mount Sinai’s comprehensive rebranding effort that centered on the merger with Continuum Health Partners in 2013 to become the largest health system in NYC.
Achan shares his wealth of knowledge locally and abroad as a lecturer and member of faulty at The Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business as well as internationally at The City University of Hong Kong, The University of Macau, the University of San Carlos and the Navy of the Philippines.
Achan holds a bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Adelphi University, a master’s degree in Advance Practice Nursing and Nurse Practitioner from New York University, a post master’s in education from Rutgers University, a post master’s in hospital and nursing administration from Villanova and is alumni and a fellow of The Wharton School of Business at the University of Pennsylvania. He is married with two children ages 8 and 5 and resides in Nassau County, NY.
John D’Abbraccio is the Vice President of Access Services at Mount Sinai Health System. His responsibilities include managing the patient transfer center, physician access services, executive services and international patient services.
Since beginning his career as a registered nurse at Mount Sinai, D’Abbraccio has served in a variety of roles. As Senior Director of Physician Access Services he was responsible for 24/7 management of all operational, clinical, and financial needs of the Physician Access and Transfer Services with emphasis on organizing the care and treatment of patients coming to The Mount Sinai Medical Center. While Senior Director of International Patient Services, he partnered with the marketing department to develop and lead traditional and digital international and corporate marketing campaigns. During his tenure as Director of Clinical Affairs, Executive Services, he maintained new and existing referral relationships with physicians and outside organizations such as embassies, consulates, missions, private corporations and private referral agencies.
After receiving his Bachelor’s degree in nursing from Adelphi University, D’Abbraccio earned and M.S.N. in Nursing Administration from NYU. He is a members of the American College of Healthcare Executives and U.S. Cooperative for International Patient Programs.
Rosie Fodera joined the Mount Sinai Health System in 2010 and is currently the Director of Administration for Marketing, Communications, Digital and Social Media. Her responsibilities include finance, contract management and human resources. As Director of Administration, she manages the administration team which is responsible contract/vendor management for approximately 90 vendors across the division. Additionally, Fodera is responsible for the financial management of 14 budgets within the division as well as for human resource management of vacancies, termination and compensation packages for approximately 62 full-time employees and 45 consultants.
Prior to joining the Mount Sinai Health System, Fodera held the positions of Market Data Senior Analyst and Global Vendor Manager at Goldman Sachs. These positions encompassed the management and budget responsibilities of market data agreements for eight business divisions.
Fodera holds a Bachelor’s degree in International Business from Hofstra University and a M.B.A. in Business Administration from Adelphi University.
The Leadership Certificate Program is an interdepartmental initiative hosted by the Center for Career and Professional Development, the Center for Student Involvement, the Office of Alumni Relations and the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business.
Its goal is to offer Adelphi undergraduate and graduate students opportunities to develop leadership and professional skills. Participants are able to attend workshops on a wide variety of topics during the course of the year.
