Allen Louissaint
Outstanding Campus Recreation Employee, Outstanding Citizen
Many students spent their long winter break catching up with friends, watching television, bumming around, or working for some extra cash. Allen Louissaint, an Adelphi senior, and other members of the Newman Club here at Adelphi were up at sunrise everyday caring for disabled and orphaned children in Montego Bay, Jamaica.
Allen and his crew spent a week in beautiful Jamaica working with the “Mustard Seed Community” organization that houses disabled and orphaned children, and now help young pregnant teenagers. When Allen and friends arrived their task was to makeover the naked structure of a building sat empty which would eventually serve its purpose as the new facility to house the teens. Allen’s responsibilities were to help feed, teach, and play with the children already in the community as well as spend time painting, building, moving equipment, taking inventory, gardening, and landscaping to prepare the new facility.
For a guy who hasn’t missed a day of school since the 5
th grade, Allen divulged that his personal accomplishment was taking the chance by stepping outside his comfort zone and deciding to carryout his lifelong goal of mission work. Now that he has accomplished his goal, Allen has said that he cannot envision his life without doing more and plans to get more involved in community service and mission work.
Allen, known for his infectious smile and for being extremely well mannered, has been working at Campus Recreation since the fall of ’06 and also works for Alumni Relations. He is a Political Science major and is also working towards a minor in history, which he is very passionate about. He hopes to continue his education in Grad School getting his degree in Education while becoming a liaison for students and Adelphi alumni.
