Employment Graduate Assistant Positions

The Adelphi Campus Recreation Department has three Graduate Assistants.  The graduate assistants are considered “para-professional” staff and are expected to work and act as professionals in a college setting.  The GA’s work together as a team and are given opportunities for professional development on the job, in weekly staff meetings and are encouraged to attend local, regional and national professional meetings and conferences.

Responsibilities of all positions includes program/area specific duties as well as shared responsibility for supervision of the recreation facilities and student personnel on weekends and some evenings.  Graduate Assistants have a varied work schedule including some day, evening and weekend hours.

The positions are 2 years in longevity. Each GA is committed for a one year appointment with an expected renewal for a 2nd year based on acceptable job performance during the first year.

  1. Fitness and Facilities Graduate Assistant
    (Seeking candidates for Fall ’08) 

  2. Promotions/Special Events Graduate Assistant
    (Anticipated opening Fall '09)

  3. Intramural Sports Graduate Assistant
    (Seeking candidates for Fall ’08)

Qualifications:
Required: Applicants must have a minimum of a Bachelor’s degree and be applying to or be pursuing a graduate degree from Adelphi in Physical Education, Sports Management, Exercise Science or a related business field.  Experience working in a related recreational sports setting is also required.   Red Cross certification in First Aid and CPR for the professional rescuer will be required upon starting.

Preferred:

  1. Persons with a strong desire to work in a recreational setting are preferred.
  2. Fitness Certification (or equivalent in experience or course work in exercise science) are desirable for the Fitness and Facilities GA.
  3. Experience in a collegiate intramural sport setting is desirable for Intramural GA.

Compensation: Tuition Remission for 9 graduate credits per semester and monetary stipend of $2500 per semester in exchange for:

  1. 20-25hours/week during the fall and spring semesters     
  2. Supervisory coverage during January and Spring Breaks as needed     
  3. Attendance (work) at Freshmen Orientation Program (6 days) in July    
  4. Attend required training/planning sessions 1 week prior to start of each semester

Job Descriptions

Graduate Assistant for Fitness and Facilities
(Opening for Fall ’08)

  1. Plan, promote and implement group fitness classes.  Involved in the hiring of instructors and class assistants (instructors in training).
  2. Teach 1 or 2 Group Fitness Classes as needed.
  3. Supervise the Recreational Fitness Center including hiring and training of staff, programming  and maintenance.
  4. Work in cooperation with Fitness Interns in implementation of Fitness Center orientations and consultations.
  5. Coordinate the displays for the Fitness Center and Group Fitness Bulletin boards.
  6. Assist the Director in coordinating and recording all facility schedules, creates weekly open gymnasium schedule and conducts weekly facility audits, following up on all work orders
  7. Supervise Recreation Facility (Oversees Gym, pool, Fitness Center) on weekends and some evenings.
  8. Assist the Professional staff as needed with carrying out the overall mission and programming


Graduate Assistant for Promotions and Special Events
(Anticipated Opening for Fall '09)

  1. Coordination, planning and implementation of promotional schemes for all Campus Recreation programs and activities.
  2. Coordinate timeline and implementation of displays for several Campus Rec bulletin Boards around campus.
  3. Hire and supervise staff for promotions and special events.
  4. Work as the committee chair and primary planner for the Cat Cup Challenge, a year long resident hall competition, and liaison with the Department of Residential Life.  This includes planning the schedule of events, tracking the budget and preparing all necessary paperwork for event expenses, purchasing prizes and event supplies and implementing the events.
  5. Plan and implement all special events including Cat Cup Challenge and other co-coordinated or supported events such as Greek Olympics, Sorority and/or Fraternity events held in the gym, and Student Faculty Basketball, and the like. 
  6. Supervise Recreation Facility (Oversees Gym, pool, Fitness Center) on weekends and some evenings
  7. Assist the Professional staff as needed with carrying out the overall mission and programming.


Graduate Assistant for Intramural Sports
(Opening for Fall of ‘08)

  1. Plan and implement all intramural sports such as Flag Football, Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer, Dodgeball, and more.
  2. Track game results, stats and keeps website up to date.
  3. Organize one day tournaments in sports such as badminton as well as Intramural events such as the Skills Challenge, Basketball All Star Game and Last Man Standing Tournament.
  4. Hire, train, schedule and supervise intramural staff, including supervisors, officials and scorekeepers.
  5. Perform periodic equipment inventory and purchasing requests.  This includes design and ordering of intramural championship t-shirts and all-star game shirts.
  6. Supervise Recreation Facility (Oversees Gym, pool, Fitness Center) on weekends and some evenings
  7. Assist the Professional staff as needed with carrying out the overall mission and programming
