Q: Am I guaranteed a job?
A: No. However, if you sign up promptly for an Orientation session, chances are extremely good that you will be offered a job. You will know shortly after the Orientation whether you are selected, and will receive your school assignment shortly thereafter.

Q: Do I have to have any special experience to qualify for this job?
A: No. Students from all fields can make fine tutors, whatever their experience to date. What is needed most is commitment, reliability, and enjoying children.

Q: How far are the sites from the campus?
A: Currently, the participating schools are located in Floral Park (Sewanhaka Middle School, about 10 minutes away), Mineola (various elementary schools, all approximately 10 minutes from campus), Hempstead (ABGS Middle School, 10 to 15 minutes), and Roosevelt (two elementary and one charter school, 15 minutes from Adelphi).

Q: Do I have to work over Adelphi holidays?
A: No. You are not required to work during university holidays. However, many tutors prefer to work in the schools during Winter & Spring recesses, since public schools are open and students are available to work full-time during breaks. While we understand your first priority is your studies, tutors must also understand they have responsibilities and obligations to both the teachers and their students. With that, if you need to take off to study for exams or are sick, you may only do so after notifying both the AR/AC program director and your teacher about your availability.

Q: Will I always be in a classroom setting?
A: Tutors are deployed by their teachers in a variety of ways, but tutor feedback indicates that the greatest use of tutors in one-on-one with students identitified by the classroom teacher as needing additional help. However, you will be working with that child in a classroom setting, not in a private setting; your teacher will always be present in the room where you are working. Most classrooms are set up so a tutor can work privately with a student or a small group of students while other classroom activities go on. In the classroom, you may also be assigned to work with small or larger groups.

Q: Can you check my financial aid status and tell me if I qualify and for how much?
A: If you received a letter from us about the program, you probably qualify. We can usually tell you the amount of your award, but all other financial aid questions must be directed to the Office of Financial Aid at 516.877.3080.

Q: Will I need any special documents, etc.?
A: Yes. Once you meet all of the program requirements and are hired, you will need to fill out additional paperwork at the Office of Human Resources. When you fill out the paperwork, you will need to bring documentation regarding your work eligibility. You must complete this paperwork before you can get paid.

Q: Where can I pick up blank time sheets?
A: You can download the America Reads Timesheet (PDF 40KB) and America Counts Timesheet (PDF 40KB) or you may also pick them up at the Center for Career Development in Post Hall Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m.–4:30 p.m. or Wednesdays, 8:30 a.m.–7:30 p.m.

Q: Where can I drop off my signed time sheets?
A: You can drop off completed timesheets signed by your cooperating teacher at the Center for Career Development. If the office is closed, please drop signed timesheets in the mailbox located outside of the front door. If you leave your timesheet in the mailbox, please notify the Career Center Staff by phone or email. Your supervisor can fax them to the Center for Career Development at 516.877.3136.
