As a family member of an Adelphi University student, you play an integral role in encouraging him or her to make important decisions about courses of study and potential career opportunities. In this section, we’d like to give you an overview of who we are—and then to describe some tools and resources needed to facilitate career-related discussions.
The Center for Career Development is a team of career educators dedicated to developing and implementing programs and services designed to promote lifelong career management skills. We collaborate with students, faculty, alumni, university colleagues and employers to build partnerships that enhance career development and generate career-based experiential education and employment opportunities for students.
It is our philosophy that students should begin career exploration early. The Career Center promotes developing lifelong skills in order to identify, research and develop career opportunities. We advocate a comprehensive four-year P.L.A.N. For Your Future:
You can also download a larger copy (PDF 3.9MB) of the P.L.A.N. image that appears below that you can print out .
Prepare:
-
Assess your values, interests and skills; explore academic majors
Learn:
-
Understand your major; identify key players in your industry of interest
Act:
-
Apply for internships and/or jobs; interact with professionals in your field
Next:
-
Finalize resume, interview for employment; think about graduate school
Our P.L.A.N.provides students with stepping stones to promote career awareness, make professional connections and gain a competitive edge. We help students in executing this plan by providing workshops on career-related topics such as resume/cover letter writing, interviewing skills, internship exploration and job search techniques. Our office facilitates many programs designed to bring students, alumni and employers together through career fairs, networking events with alumni, employer presentations and our campus recruiting programs.
Career Guidance for Family Members Best Practices:
First and Second Years
Fire up your student’s awareness of their academic and career interests. Discuss emerging values, interests and skillswhich may help to identify career paths.
Promote joining student clubs and organizations. Employers often scan resumes seeking students with leadership qualities gained through such participation.
Encourage them to visit the Career Center during all four years. It is never too early to begin career preparation. Students are advised to make an appointment with a career counselor to discuss their interests, majors, skills and career opportunities.
Investigate the Career Liftoff Interest Inventory an assessment given by the Career Center that matches individual interests with potential occupations.
Advise them to register with PantherZone the Career Center’s online job and internship posting software system.
Discuss internship possibilities and the policies and procedures that accompany them. Make an appointment with the Career Center’s Internship Coordinator.
Boost his or her interest in volunteering. Besides developing valuable skills, volunteer opportunities assist a student in broadening his or her professional network.
Encourage your student to get to know their faculty members and administrators.
Be the first to conduct an informational interview with your student. Family, friends and professional colleagues can also share their unique experiences and career paths.
Support participation in the mentoring program offered by the Office of Alumni Relations and the Center for Career Development. Through networking with professionals in their field and related disciplines, students receive guidance and support while gaining exposure to work environments, career paths and industry trends.
Be a champion! Inspire your student to build on these experiences and show enthusiasm for their developing skills. Then, rally them on when they begin to write their first resume.
Third and Fourth Years
Recommend attending our Career Center workshops including resume and cover letter preparation, interviewing skills, internships, dressing for success, how to work a job fair, networking and the job search.
The Career Center collaborates with the Office of Alumni Relations on many programs and events. Encourage your student to join the Future Alumni Leaders Association (F.A.L.A.) and to participate in alumni networking events including C.O.A.C.H. (Count on Alumni for Career Help) and Dress for Success events. These programs are a great way for your student to connect with Adelphi alumni and build their professional network.
Foster an interest in current events and employment trends by being a good role model: stay abreast of news stories through credible sources either in print or online and discuss them with family members.
Advise your student to connect with prospective employers through the Career Center’s on-campus recruitment program and various career fairs both on and off campus.
Encourage them to further develop and expand their job search or graduate school plan.
Important Note:Urge your student to begin the search for internships. Some companies and organizations begin interviewing on campus during the fall semester for upcoming summer internship opportunities!
Career planning is a processand the Career Center is here to help your family member every step of the way during this important, exciting and sometimes hectic time in his or her life. However, the more your student prepares, the less stressful and more productive the process will be. Best wishes to your student in all future professional endeavors!
We look forward to supporting students in crafting their career plans. If you have any questions, please contact Thomas J. Ward, Jr., Director of the Center for Career Development, at 516.877.3130 or tward@adelphi.edu.
