The Center for Career Development is a comprehensive career center serving the students and alumni of all schools within Adelphi University. Services and Resources are available to freshmen, sophomore, juniors, seniors, graduate students, and alumni.

Individual Career Counseling:
Professional staff are available to counsel students and alumni by appointment. You may discuss in confidence any career-related matters, such as choice of major or career, job search, résumé critique, interview preparation, salary negotiation, and graduate school application. Students and alumni have the option of telephone counseling appointments, if necessary, and résumé/cover letter critique can be conducted by fax or email.

Career Resource Library and Job Search Series:
The Center provides a library of career-related books (currently 200 volumes) and employer literature. The Center produces or subscribes to several publications for free distribution. Our many free publications include our new Job Search Series with tips on: Internships, Jobs on Campus, Resumes and Cover Letters, Job Search Strategies, Networking, The Internet as a Job Search Tool, and The Interview Process.

Other handouts include:

  • Current contact information for all public and private schools on Long Island
  • New York City Department of Education application packets
  • The American Association of Employment in Education Job Search Handbook for Educators
  • Job Choices, published by the National Association of Colleges and Employers
  • Graduate School Guide
  • Several periodicals pertinent to specific programs
  • Application/registration booklets for all graduate/professional school admissions tests.

The library currently has three computers for students to use for Internet searches and word processing.

Current Jobs and Internships:
Annually, the Center receives approximately 10,000 listings for current jobs in fields including business, education, University, healthcare, social work, government, part-time, on-campus, child care, summer, and volunteer opportunities.

Listings are forwarded to our Internet partners such as PantherZone for posting on our Web site.

The Center for Career Development receives announcements for a variety of paid and unpaid internships. The greatest numbers of internships received are in the fields of communications, marketing, and the arts.

In schools where fieldwork is a required component of the curriculum (e.g., education, nursing, and social work), placements are handled by the academic departments. For other students, internships are optional. Some academic departments offer credits for internships. The Center for Career Development serves as a clearinghouse for internship offerings and provides related services including self-assessment, résumé/interview preparation and internship search planning. One of the major objectives in promoting career services to students early in their college years is to encourage more students to participate in internships as part of their résumé-building experience.

Student Employment:
(Work-Study and Campus Employment)
The Center for Career Development is the clearinghouse for all Work-study or on-campus student employment. Approximately 50 departments have budgets to hire students. At the Center for Career Development, students can review job descriptions, obtain a campus employment application, and verify their financial aid (or receive an exemption if they do not qualify for aid). At Adelphi University, every student, regardless of citizenship or financial status, is eligible to apply for on-campus employment. Although international students are ineligible for Federal aid, they may apply for campus employment. To facilitate hiring, departments can request interview tables at the Welcome Back Block Party held during the first week of the fall semester.

Workshops and Seminars:
The Center schedules workshops throughout the year on a variety of topics including: resume writing, interviewing skills and internships. Students and alumni should attend a resume workshop and follow the Career Center's Job Search Series in preparing a resume prior to meeting with a counselor for a critique. Students and alumni are invited to attend one of the many Career Center seminars which are required for the on-campus recruitment program in their field of interest: arts & sciences, business, education, nursing and social work. On-Campus Recruitment Programs:
The Center for Career Development reserves interview dates for employers, sends employers résumés of interested candidates and schedules 30-minute interviews with individuals that the employers select. The process takes several months to execute and students must be well prepared in advance. Eligibility requirements are discussed on our On-Campus Recruitment Updates page.

The Arts & Sciences and Business Recruitment invitation list is updated each year, adding new employers from our recent job listings and from current business publications. Employers are asked to complete a short evaluation of each candidate and a career counselor later reviews their remarks with the student.

For Education/Social Work Recruitment, employers include public and private schools, healthcare providers, and social service agencies in the New York metropolitan area.

Adelphi's Center for Career Development is co-founder of a Long Island college consortium, formed to bring out-of-area public school districts to Long Island to interview candidates seeking employment in school settings. The program has grown each year and about 40 public school districts participate. Candidate eligibility and registration is similar to our other program for educators. The consortium also arranges for the New York City Department of Education to do interviewing and fingerprinting at a Long Island campus.

Job Fairs:
Job fairs bring large numbers of employers to campus to meet with students and distribute information about their organizations. Some collect résumés and some conduct on-the-spot interviews. The Center for Career Development organizes fairs for on-campus jobs, part-time and full-time jobs, and internships.

The Spring Job Fairs are designed to serve all of the schools of the University by bringing employers with opportunities in business, government, healthcare, social service, and education. Since space is limited and the Center for Career Development aims to serve all career fields, selected employers are invited. Those employers offering only commissioned sales positions are not included.

During the first week of the fall semester, the Center for Career Development holds its Welcome Back Block Party outside Post Hall as a means of bringing students together with campus departments who have funds to hire students. The Center makes all on-campus and off-campus job information available to students, helps them process their applications, and verifies eligibility for Work-study status. In addition, the Center for Career Development invites local employers seeking to hire large numbers of students for part-time jobs.

Interest Assessment:
The Center for Career Development offers several career assessment instruments: the Strong Interest Inventory and the Career Liftoff Interest Inventory. Occupational titles are linked to the Occupational Outlook Handbook published by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the Occupational Information Network (or O*net) published by the U.S. Dept of Labor. You may make an appointment to take one of the assessments at the Center for Career Development by calling 516.877.3130.

Credential File Service:
Students and alumni may set up files of confidential and non-confidential letters of recommendation and related documents which will be kept for forwarding to potential employers or to graduate or professional schools. Click here for a complete description of the credential file service.
