Help! I'm Undecided. |
Don't worry. You are not alone! Contact the Office of Academic Services and Retention in Levermore room 303, at ext. 3142. This office will arrange an appointment with an adviser.
We recommend that you use time wisely so that you can make an informed decision instead of a last-minute hasty choice. Take courses in several different disciplines to introduce yourself to new and exciting possibilities. Talk to current students, professors, or people working in fields that may interest you (informational interviewing) to familiarize yourself with a possible major or career.
Unless the career you are planning requires a specific major (e.g. accounting, nursing) pick a major that you love. You will do well in this subject and a strong GPA will be attractive to employers. Courses should include those that will develop essential skills. Regardless of field, all employers want employees with strong communication, interpersonal, critical thinking, organizational, research, and computer skills. Besides our counselors who can help you through individual career counseling, you can also participate in the Major/Career Information Fair, FOrE classes on career development, workshops, and career interest assessments.
Relax. Don't put so much pressure on yourself. Most likely you are having trouble choosing a major because you believe that you must know now what your future career will be. Major decision does not equal career decision. If you are undecided, pick a subject that you love. You will do well in this subject and good grades are an attribute that will make you a valuable addition to any prospective employer or graduate / professional school.
Visit the Center for Career Development. You can research different majors and careers. In addition, you can take a career inventory that will assist you in choosing a major. Then meet with a career counselor to discuss your options. You can visit the Center for Career Development in Post Hall or call us at ext. 3130.
