What can I do with... Pre-Law Concentration

The American Bar Association does not recommend a particular major, nor is there a major that law schools prefer. It is recommended that you choose a major that will help you develop skills that are necessary as a future law student and lawyer such as reading comprehension, research, writing, critical analysis, problem solving, and public speaking. In addition to choosing a major that will nurture these skills, you should also pick a major that interests you. People tend to do better in majors that they enjoy. This major will yield a higher G.P.A which will increase your chances of being admitted to law school.

Timetable
Freshman and Sophomore Year

  • Pick a Major:
    • that both interests you and you enjoy because this will help you to achieve a high G.P.A.
    • that develops your skills/knowledge in writing/research, critical thinking, and public speaking.
  • Develop a relationship with your major adviser and prelaw adviser
  • Sign up with the Prelaw Council. (Contact Ms. Nadine Agnew, Secretary, History Department, for membership.)
  • Explore your interest in law through prelaw society activities.
  • Visit Adelphi's Center for Career Development (Post Hall) where you will find information on part time jobs, summer jobs, internships, as well as law school and LSAT information.
Junior Year
  • By second semester of this year (at the latest), you should have written as least one long, critical paper. After completion, you can ask this professor for a recommendation. The most important skill that law schools are looking for in their applicants is writing and research ability.
  • Take the LSAT in June after your junior year. Purchase the Guide to US Law Schools (by the American Bar Association and Association for American Law Schools). On the test application in the LSAT/LSDAS Registration Information Book, check off the box "yes" in order to send your scores to the Adelphi University Prelaw Adviser. (This is very important.) It is strongly recommended that you take a LSAT preparation course. Adelphi offers a high quality and reasonably priced preparation course or you can take a commercial course at a higher cost. Adelphi's course is offered prior to the June and October LSATs.
  • Take advantage of counseling, résumé/cover letter assistance and workshops at the Center for Career Development in Post Hall.
Senior Year
  • If you have not already done so, you must take the LSAT no later than October of your senior year.
  • In the fall, attend the law school forum in New York City sponsored by the law school admissions council. (This event usually takes place in September. Contact your prelaw adviser for the date and location). If you are on the prelaw mailing list, you will be receiving this information automatically.
  • After you have received your LSAT score and have reviewed the schools in the Guide to U.S. Law Schools, make an appointment with your adviser to plan you personal application strategy.
  • Take advantage of counseling, résumé/cover letter assistance and workshops at the Center for Career Development in Post Hall.
