While there is not a specific Pre-Med Major, there is a Pre-Med program at Adelphi. This program includes advisement (Adviser, Professor Shopsis, Science 123a, 516.877.4140), and participation in Alpha Epsilon Delta, the Premedical Honor Society (required science G.P.A. of 3.0). AED provides opportunities to network with fellow students as well as attend presentations by health professionals, school admissions officers, and medical research scientists. AED meetings are held every Wednesday in Science 204 at 1:00 p.m.

• All "Pre-Med" students should register with the pre med secretary (Mrs. Blanche Crawford, Science 201) during their freshman year. After registering with the secretary, make an appointment with the pre med adviser, Professor Shopsis (Science 123a, 516.877.4140)
• "Pre-Med" students may major in any subject but must take the following subjects in order to meet the academic requirements of medical school:
  • General Chemistry (one year sequence)
  • Organic Chemistry (one year sequence)
  • General Biology (one year sequence)
  • Physics (one year sequence)
  • Math (at least one semester)
  • Statistics (at least one semester)
• Admissions to health professional schools requires excellent grades, strong standardized test scores, and documented interest in the profession as demonstrated by relevant volunteer, work, and research experience.
• Careful planning is important because the required science courses must be completed by the end of the junior year, at which time, the national pre-professional examinations should be taken.
• A "Pre-Med" student will be well prepared for the following health professional schools:

  • Optometry School
  • Osteopathic Medical College
  • Physical Therapy School
  • Physician's Assistant School
  • Podiatry School
  • Veterinary Medical College
