Latin Music Update

by Gustavo Escobar

It is getting close to Christmas which, as we all know, translates into "shop-until-you-drop-time." And that is why many artists choose this time of year to launch their new CD's. In the past week alone, the market has exploded with new Latin music CD's, including many by merengue artists.

One of the most popular merengue groups in recent times, Grupomania, has just released their most recent CD, "Masters of the Stage." The first single of this CD is "Bajo La Lluvia Negra." It has had a very favorable response on the local radio stations.  Grupomania's style of merengue is directly influenced by one of the most famous merengue groups of all times, Los Hermanos Rosario.

Not to be left behind in the current flurry of new CD's, Los Hermanos Rosario also have a new CD, "Bomba 2000."  The first single on this CD is "Siento" and has hit the top ten on LaMega's (97.9fm) top 20 countdown.

After a very successful first CD, The New York group Fulanto has also just released their second album, "El Padrino." Their music is an interesting blend of the new-style merengue with a touch of the old style, which is evident through the use of the accordion.

The Puerto Rican group Cana Brava has recently released their latest work "Mas a Caballo que Nunca." This group had taken two years off from recording but are now back on top of the merengue world with the song "El Amor Nacio Asi."

Back in New York, the merengue group Mala-Fe has caused a sensation with its particular style of merengue.  The great beat and sounds are complemented by the raspy voice of lead singer Juan Gutierrez.  The hit single is called "La Vaca," or in English "The Cow." The lack of lyrics in the song is made up for by the fact that it has a fast and catchy beat, which eventually will make everyone dance.

Also in New York, merengue artist Luisa has also released her debut CD, "Luisa."  Her first single, "Me Enamoro Mas," has reached the top 15 on LaMega's top 20 countdown.

The world of salsa is seeing the rise of a new star and her name is Lazz. Her CD "Completamente Tuya," is a huge hit in New York.  The first track of this CD, "Aunque Me Voy," is constantly heard on the Latin radio stations.

Staying with salsa, Luis Damon recently released his 3rd CD, "Luis Damon." After only a couple of months on the shelves it already has a hit single titled, "Se Nos Acabo el Amor."

A quick change of pace to the world of Bolero ÷ or in English ballads: the Colombian group Los Tri-o has recently released their second CD, "Mi Gloria Eres Tu." They sing old bolero songs with their original music.  Their latest CD also includes two songs by Kike Santander, who also composed songs for Gloria Estefan.
