Swirbul Library has always been a haven of tranquility for those students who need to study, research, or simply surf the internet for information. Although commuters have an ample amount of time to utilize the library and its resources, the schedule definitely needs to be revised and expanded to benefit those students of resident status.
Open seven days of the week, the Swirbul Library schedule is as follows:
Monday - Thursday 8:00am - 11:00 pm
Friday - 8:00 am - 6:00 pm
Saturday 10:00 am - 6:00 pm
Sunday 12:00 noon - 10:00 pm
Although it may seem as if the hours are many and plentiful, most resident students do not even begin their studies and homework until 11:00 in the evening on weekdays. Frequent complaints come from resident students who work off-campus until midnight, then must return to residence halls which frequently distract them from their concentration and work.
It is obvious that the highest usage of the library is during finals week, in which the library is open 24 hours a day. This inevitably sets a bad example and pattern for resident students who hold a large credit load. It means that during the course of the semester, maximum studying may not be accomplished due to the library being closed when quiet time is needed, forcing many residents to use the finals week as a "cramming" period at the last minute. This is unhealthy for any student's GPA as well as daily routine, for all courses require studying throughout the semester, not just at the end.
In conclusion, I advise all resident students to make an effort to build their communication and access to the Library committee, in hopes of changing the unfair schedule. This in turn can help the Adelphi ranking once the average student GPA is raised as a result of this revision.
