University on Upswing, Says Scott

by Tom Westerman

Robert A. Scott, Adelphi's president, delivered his third State of the University Address on September 11. Called to order as a Faculty Meeting, Steve Goldberg, the new chair of the Faculty Senate, dispensed with the usual remarks and asked for a moment o f silence in memory of those killed in atacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon the day before.

Calling this his first encore, Dr. Scott said "I am here again but that does not mean we will [just] repeat what we did last year." Rather, Dr. Scott said, it is a "foundation for the future" and Adelphi will build on the good works of the previous year.

With enrollment up dramatically (11% for freshman undergrads, 17% for transfers and 22% for graduate students) budget goals are being met -- provided of course, Adelphi meets spring enrollment goals.

Additionally, the academic track of Adelphi is improving. At last count 100% of the graduating nursing students who took the certification exam passed. Up from 40% last year. Also, the addition of the new faculty and the completion of the faculty contract, Dr. Scott said, show that Adelphi is academically strong.

Others are recognizing that strength as well. "I don't believe much in the magazine rankings," said Dr. Scott, but according to US News and World Report Adelphi has moved up one equal footing with Temple and The New School University in New York City.

Adelphi also has hired a new provost, Dr. Macia Grosse Welch and has either hired new administrators or is searching for new ones. Also, 1/3 of all faculty are new since 1997. Adelphi is growing and renewing itself, said Dr. Scott.

Growth is not only measured in people but in buildings. Plans are underway for a new recreation center to be located where the tennis courts are now and a new 179 bed dorm on the west side of the Library. Also, Olmsted Theater is scheduled to undergo some renovation to expand its capabilities.

All this is laid out in a plan of action that Dr. Scott presented to the university at the end of the last academic year the plan is on reserve in the Library and available from the Deans' office.
