Injuries, Inexperience Plague Men's Soccer

by Tony Zachariadis

A month into the season, the Panthers men's soccer team find themselves in a quagmire. With two wins and seven losses you can't compare this team with the teams of the last two years.

According to coach Bob Montgomery ,"What we gained defensively this year, we lost offensively."

The Panthers appear to lack that strong offensive player who must step up in each game. They have seven new freshmen on the team, who still have to get into the swing of things. Combine that with injuries, which always seem to find their way into the land of the Panthers, and you now see the problems.

"It is frustrating," says Coach Montgomery. "It seems whenever we get someone back, then someone else is getting hurt."

Dean Marinello (#8) had surgery in May, and has not fully recovered. Gary Sullivan (#4) who Montgomery calls "one of the top players on the team" broke a few bones in his foot and has been recovering and is awaiting surgery. For the time "he can only play sixty percent."

A prime example of the Adelphi injury curse is the game against Cornell. Adelphi lost a heartbreaking game by the score of 1-0, and had 5 starting players leave due to injuries in the first half alone.

"We need to get healthy," said Coach Montgomery. "More importantly we need to get wins in order to build our confidence".

Adelphi started last year's season 0-5, and then went on a six game winning streak. With such a new and fragile team, a two or three game winning could do wonders for the Panthers mental state, especially with the difficult schedule that they have ahead of them.To do so the Panthers will have to turn to their leaders' Ander Solomonson (#20), Gary Sullivan (#4), and Goalie Igor Yatensko (#27), to lead them along the way.

Another problem the Panthers are facing this season, is poor attendance at games. The mountains of dirt piled next to the soccer field isn't the first thing spectators should have to see. Some believe it has chased potential fans away. The pile is actually landfill for the new dorm behind the library, and is only being stored there temporarily.
Coach Montgomery says it's not a bother. "Theres a little bit of dust flowing in the practice field, but that's about it."

Montgomery believes that the attendance problem has existed long before the pile appeared. "We haven't noticed any change in attendance… we're never going to draw a good crowd at Adelphi, until we get lights."

He said that most people can't make the games due to work and school scheduling conflicts, because all Adelphi games are played in the afternoon. One of the biggest crowds Adelphi ever had was when they played 10 years ago at Garden City Park and had roughly 800 people watch them.

The Panthers won their last home game against Howard, shutting them out 4-0. Senior Haruto Imamura scored two goals in the victory. As of this writing, the Panthers have extended their win streak to two, improving to 4-7 overall and 2-1 in the Atlantic Soccer Conference (ASC). The Bison drop to 2-8 on the season and 2-3 in the conference.
