Faculty Series: Get to Know Adelphi's Finest

by Kathy Dodd

Meet Dr. Paul Thaler

Born and bred in New York City, Professor Paul Thaler, a new faculty member at Adelphi, brings much to our university family. With a masters in journalism and a Ph.D. in communication studies from New York University, Thaler is an experienced teacher and program administrator.

He has come to Adelphi from Mercy College where he was the director of the journalism and media program. Thaler has also taught in the undergraduate and graduate divisions at New York University and is a former Fulbright Senior Scholar in Journalism to Romania.

Thaler is a noted author with a third book coming out next year, as well as a media critic, appearing on numerous nationals television and radio programs.

So what brings him to Adelphi? Thaler responds: "It's because of Adelphi's rising reputation as an important university in the New York area. I want to be a part of growing communications department and a vibrant academic community. I believe I'll find that here." Thaler has already taken the challenge of being the faculty adviser for The Delphian.

Meet Dr. Robert Goldfarb

Coming to Adelphi University with a Ph.D. in Communication Sciences received at New York University, Professor Robert Goldfarb has much to offer his Adelphi students. He has been a longtime teacher at the CUNY graduate center, where he was also the executive officer of speech and hearing sciences. When asked why he came to Adelphi to teach as a Senior Adjunct faculty member, Goldfarb responded, "I wanted to rejoin a friend that I have done research with in the past." Goldfarb is currently working on research in stuttering and language disorders in brain-damaged adults.

On a more personal side, Goldfarb deems himself a "gym rat." "You can always find me in the gym, I'm always there," laughed Goldfarb. Along with his interest for working out is his love for the beach while leaving time to play piano and guitar. Professor Goldfarb has a wife and a 13-year old daughter.

Meet Dr. Francine Conway

Adelphi has brought back one its own, with the hiring of Professor Francine Conway. Graduating from Cornell University with a psychology degree, Conway holds a social work masters degree from Columbia, as well as a Ph.D. received here at Adelphi University from the Derner Institute in Clinical Psychology. Prior to her arrival this fall, Conway taught four years at the Brooklyn campus of Long Island University.

So what brings Conway to Adelphi University? She said that the university would allow her greater research opportunities enabling her to go deeper into her area of interest. "I am very passionate about my area of interest, gerontology, which is all about working with the elderly. I am very concerned about care giving issues and related health issues when it comes to the elderly."

Conway research interests are extensive. She is involved in research that deals with preventing breast cancer, obesity and its connection to breast cancer, and the challenges faced by grandparents raising their grandchildren.

On a more personal side, Professor Conway was a part of, and still is a part of, the sorority Delta Sigma Pheta. She also enjoys playing piano at home.
