New Hall Officially Opens Wide

by Max Heintz

Hand-made ceremonial scissors purchased for $37.50 in the hands of Garden City Mayor Dr. Barbara Miller officially opened the yet unnamed new residence hall on October 13th. Built on time and under budget in the space of only 14 months, it is the first new residence hall constructed on Adelphi's Garden City campus in 30 years.

The new residence hall holds 180 students, and is located behind the Swirbul Library. The residence hall has private bathrooms and individual climate control systems, including air conditioning. There is an outdoor patio and a courtyard, and a lounge on each floor.

The half-hour long ribbon cutting ceremony kicked-off at noon with President Scott shouting, "Good Afternoon!" followed by the singing of the Alma Mater.

President Robert Scott then walked to the podium and introduced Dr. Miller; Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Steve Fisher; and Barry Zeman, head of the Buildings and Ground Committee. In his speech, Scott praised Fletcher Thompson, the architectural firm responsible for the building's design, for a design that was "even better than anticipated." Scott also commented that the building was designed in such a way that minimized its impact on the surrounding environment. Thanks were also given to Jim Koslowski, head of Facilities Management, for his invaluable assistance. In addition, President Scott thanked the Village of Garden City for its involvement (funding a good deal of the project) and emphasized the need for maintaining good relations with the surrounding community. "We want to be great neighbors [with Garden City]," he stated.

Scott then introduced Steve Fisher, who took the stand with a smile. "Everything I wanted to say he's already said!" Fisher exclaimed, much to the amusement of the audience. Fisher went on to thank Adelphi's faculty for being the reason students want to get an education on this campus. He also praised adelphi as a whole, saying it was a "very special place." In addition to further emphasizing good relations with the community, Fisher also praised President Scott for his leadership. "We're very fortunate to have Bob Scott to lead us into the 21st century."

Fisher was followed by Garden City mayor Dr. Barbara Miller. In her address, Dr. Miller thanked members of the administration for their excellent cooperation with the village government in the construction of the New hall. She also stated that the building behind her was a positive symbol of accomplishment: "[New Hall] shows our unique government in Garden City works." Dr. Miller closed by applauding Scott for his efforts in overseeing the project's speedy completion.

She was followed by Barry Zeman, head of the Buildings and ground Committee. Zeman began by commending President Scott for his exceptional performance as the management leader of the project. He also thanked Jim Koslowski and his staff for their hard work without which the project would have been impossible.

The actual ribbon cutting was done at the end of Zeman's speech and was met with great applause from the audience. Immediately afterward, president Scott invited all in attendance to come inside for a tour of the building, so they could see what the hard work of so many had accomplished.
