Mystique Bar Raid Exposed

by Erin Lounsbury

Police raided a local nightclub in Garden City recently and arrested two Adelphi students after a resident complained that the noise from the club was disturbing the neighborhood. The club, Mystique Lounge, was rented out by Scott Cohen, 22, a junior business major, an active organizer of student events and president of Another Level Entertainment. It was Cohen who organized the recent Thursday night.

Cohen said, "We decided to have the party at Mystique because it's about two to three miles from the University. Underage drunk driving is a huge concern for me, so having it close is a good thing because taxis are not easily available."

The event, which include DJs from Power 105, took two weeks of planning to "create a buzz." Cohen states, "The goal of the night was to host an incredible party for college students in a safe environment." However, an unexpected turn of events turned one incredible party into one hectic night of underage drinkers dodging the police.

With free admission and drinks for ladies, by 11:30 p.m., the club was filled with over 300 students, when it fits 250 people at full capacity. Cohen said that so many people turned up for the event that all exists had to be made final.

"The bar was so crowded; it took me over 20 minutes to get too drinks for my friend and myself," explained one of the students in attendance at Mystique. "We ended up leaving shortly after the drinks to hit another nightclub, Image, because I was too crowded-but Image was so empty that no one was on the dance floor, so we left and went back to the dorms.

Cohen said that it was around midnight that the police finally came. "I first made sure everyone was okay. Then I started to let people know slowly, in order to prevent mass hysteria. I mean, this was the first time a bar was raided in the four years I have been doing this, and we've done events in over 30 places, including Studio 54."

The people asked to leave the club were those under 18 who used fake IDs to get in and those who were under 21 and were drinking. This included some of the underage shot girls who were selling shots at the club for Another Level Entertainment. One shot girl said, "I had no clue what time it was when we had to leave - I think it was later than midnight. For only being at the club a few hours, I still made about $200 after I paid for the bottles of vodka. In the end, it all worked out and was a good night."

Another student who had stayed back at the dorms said, "I thought it was strange that I kept seeing everyone come back from the club around 12:30 a.m. when they had just left to go to Mystique two hours before. I didn't think anything of it, until someone knocked on my door looking for my roommate. She was concerned saying my roommate was the only one they didn't see come back yet and wanted to know if he made it back safely but he had to walk home with a bunch of people."

Two students didn't make it back safely that night and were arrested, but Cohen assured us that it did not have to do with underage drinking- but was actually due to a brawl between the students and the bouncers not letting them back into the club after they left. Cohen said, "I am the first one to get to the club and the last one to leave the club because I make sure everything is under control. Unfortunately, kids have fake Ids and we can't catch everyone, so underage kids are going to drink, no matter what."

Nevertheless, Scott Cohen paid for a ticket that night that the bar received, but he still made a profit and would even like to thank Mystique for being such a great place and for being so courteous. Cohen would go back go back again, but said that the place is not big enough for the crows his parties attract.

So move over Mystique and hello club Oz, a.k.a. Taboo. Cohen's next big party will take place at the end of October on Thursday night, at a much bigger location in West Hempstead, that can fit up to 1,00 students. There will be tighter security at this event and approximately 14 bouncers.

One student said, "Whenever Scott is behind a party, you know it's going to be crazy, but you're going to have one awesome time!"
