The Dopest Opus

by Kathy Dodd

"There are so many amazingly talented artists on this campus and we really give them a place to showcase their work. It allows them a forum for their more creative ideas. It also exposes the community to art and poetry that they might not experience otherwise. The things that we publish are often very deep and emotional and we find it a great honor that people entrust a piece of themselves to us in that way." What other club than the Magnum Opus, Adelphi's literary magazine, can boast of being such a valuable source for creative expression for the Adelphi Community? Since their first publishing six years ago, the Magnum Opus has demanded that the Adelphi student body take notice. And it has.

The club was originally under the sponsorship of Dr. Graham Everett, who was involved with the Magnum Opus but has since left the Advisory role. Muriel Herring, who works in the operations department in the U.C., is the current adviser of the club.

Under Herring's leadership, the club has continues with its tradition of holding their KaffeKlatsch once a semester. The event is somewhat like an Open Mic night; however, performers are required to sign up ahead of time so that the Opus can create a show with varied entertainment. This year's first KaffeKlatsch will be on Friday, November 21 at 8:30 p.m. in the U.C. Cyber Café. The club also started a new tradition last year with hosting their first annual masquerade Ball, which was modeled after Edgar Allen Poe's "Masque of the Red Death." This year's Masquerade Ball will be cosponsored by the Ballroom Club, who will be offering latin dance lessons. It will be on Thursday October 30 from 9pm to 12pm in the UC Ballroom. This year's theme will be the day of the Dead with traditional Day of the Dead altars honoring artists such as poets, actors, and musicians. A $100 gift certificate to the Roosevelt Field mall, along with other prizes, will be given away for best costumes. There will also be free food and an appearance by the girl band MURR. Admission will be $3 for AU students and $5 for non-AU students. A mask will be required for entry.

"The Magnum Opus is a fun group of people," reported Cristen Bradshaw, the president of the Magnum Opus. "The e-board that works on the magazine is incredibly dedicated and so much fun. It is a pleasure to work with them. I am going to miss the whole thing when I graduate this may. I only hope that those who take it over have as much fun as we have had!" Bradshaw also let on to an inside joke of the Magnum Opus. Ever notice a cow on the club's publicity flyers? Bradshaw explains, "We have an inside joke that started my freshman year. Campbell Kennedy, the former president, and I were trying to get people to perform at the kaffeKlatsch and in a moment of frustration, we said 'We don't care if you juggle flaming cows singing the Swedish national anthem!' Since then, it has become a tradition to say that before the KaffeKlatsch, and every now and then, you will see a cow on our flyers. It may seem random, but there is a reason behind it."

Overall, the Magnum Opus is a club that offers much to the Adelphi University community. If you are interested in getting involved, the Magnum Opus meetings are on Wednesdays at 5:30pm in UC 216. Everyone is welcome.
