What to Do in NYC: The Met

by Maria Belopolsky

It is entirely possible to have a lot of fun in Manhattan and spend only one penny (not counting transportation costs). The Metropolitan Museum of Art has only a suggested donation for entry. You can pay them as much, or as little, as you like, and they DO accept pennies.

The museum has large collections of ancient Near-Eastern art, arms and armor, greek and roman art, medieval art, musical instruments, and much more. There are three floors to explore, and it's nearly impossible to see the whole museum in one day. There is also a beautiful garden with several fountains, which is the perfect place to rest and relax for a while. There are no less than five restaurants within the museum. Those, unfortunately, are not quite as cheap as the museum entry.

The museum's address is 1000 Fifth Avenue at 82nd Street. To get to the museum, take the LIRR from Nassau Boulevard to Flatbush Avenue, transfer to the 4,5, or 6 train to 86th Street, and walk three blocks west to Fifth Avenue. The Met is open Sunday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, from 9:30am to 5:30pm. On Fridays and Saturdays, it's open from 9:30am to 9:00pm. The museum is closed on Mondays. For more information, visit www.metmuseum.org.
