The Adelphi HeartWalk had over 125 walkers in the 5K walk on Sunday, October 26th at Nassau Community College. Included in the "crowd" representing Adelphi University were a great number of our athletes, representing the Men's basketball team, Men's baseball team, swim team, AU dance team, AU cheerleaders, AU step team - and the entire Women's basketball team including Coach Kelly Watts! The dance team, cheerleaders and step team were also wonderful representatives of the University, performing in the pre-walk program - to a very appreciative and impressed audience! In addition to these groups, Adelphi's Health, Physical Education and Human Performance Sciences Club had very impressive representation, as did members of C.A.L.I.B.E.R, Alpha Epsilon Phi Sorority and Eddy Hall Mentors.
Included in the 125 walkers were Adelphi administrators, staff, faculty, parents, individual students, alum, and many relatives: two Red Hat Survivors, Richard Pennecke (father of student Lauren) and 8 yr. old Colin Sincinito, nephew of Deidre Boller of University Advancement.
Nassau Community College President Sean Fanelli expressed his appreciation for such a tremendous representation by Adelphi University, citing the two institutions have such a strong relationship - both in academic programs and community relations.
Although the final fundraising tally is not finalized - there are still donations being generated - the Adelphi HeartWalk team should reach the goal of $3,000. This is evidenced in the various fundraising efforts of cake sales, music festival, raffles, but certainly due to the great success of the "Club of Hearts" - an innovative program for those people who want to make a strong commitment to the American Heart Association. Heart disease is the No. 1 killer in the United States - far exceeding deaths from all other diseases and car accidents. Through the $25.00 membership "Club of Hearts," the proceeds aid the American Heart Association in combatting heart disease, providing money for research and professional training, technologies, and auxiliary programs such as lobbying for defibrillators in public schools and non-smoking policies. The "Club of Hearts" has at this point 62 "members" - committed to Adelphi's efforts for a healthy heart.
