The placement exam is an online exam that you are required to take before Freshmen Orientation and your arrival on campus. All incoming freshmen, as well as any other students enrolling in language courses in French, German, Spanish and Italian must take a placement exam. However, if you have never taken a language class before, you do not need to take the placement exam.
Please note that although all entering students are required to take this exam, you may not be required to take language courses, depending on your degree and major. However, the results of this exam will help you decide which courses to take if you choose to enroll in language courses or if you are required to by your program of study.
You do not need an appointment to take the placement exam, and it may be accessed from any computer with an Internet connection. The test consists of multiple-choice questions on vocabulary, grammar and reading comprehension. There is no oral or listening part. The length varies from one individual to another, with an average time of 20 minutes.
Please remember that this test is for placement only, and that the results alone will not exempt you from the language requirement at Adelphi. If your score in the online test qualifies you for exemption from the language requirement, you will be required to take the exam again on campus during Orientation or soon thereafter to confirm your status. These follow-up tests for exemption will be administered in the Language Laboratory, which is located in the basement of Earle Hall and will be open from 10:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. during Orientation.
Your score and placement on this test will not appear anywhere on your transcript and your performance has no bearing on your future academic status at Adelphi University.
The exam must represent your own work. When taking it you will be bound by Adelphi University’s Honor Code and must refrain from any activity constitutive of academic dishonesty as defined therein. In particular, you should not use any textbooks, dictionaries or other reference materials to help you with the test; the objective is to measure what you have already learned and to assist you in planning future language study.

Select the desired language from the dropdown menu and click "Begin".
You must provide the personal information requested by the form on the next page before beginning the exam, including your AP score if applicable. The "ID number" requested refers to your Adelphi ID, which you can retrieve here if you haven't already done so.
Once you have completed this form, click "Continue" to begin the exam.
Upon completing the placement exam, you will see the results automatically in your Internet browser.
Please print a copy of this and bring it to Adelphi during your Orientation session.
Under no circumstances may you register for a level lower or higher than the one to which you are assigned.
For the exam for Italian:
Click here to access the online exam - you will be taken to the log in page for Moodle, Adelphi's online learning management system.
Enter your universal name and password and click "Login"
You will see the following message: "You are about to enroll yourself as a member of this course. Are you sure you wish to do this?" You must click "Yes" to access the exam.
On the following page, click "Italian Placement Exam" to begin the exam.
Upon completing the placement exam, you will see the results automatically in your Internet browser. Please print a copy of this and bring it to Adelphi during your Orientation session.
Under no circumstances may you register for a level lower or higher than the one to which you are assigned.
