What is Tau Sigma?
Tau Sigma is a national honor society. Its purpose is to recognize and promote the academic excellence and involvement of transfer students. Currently there are over seventy chapters nationwide; New York State has the most chapters with a total of eight.
Who is eligible to join?
All incoming transfer students with at least one full year’s academic credits satisfied at their prior institution are eligible. Those who are enrolled full time during their first semester at their current institution must achieve a minimum average of a 3.5 on a 4.0 GPA scale or an academic average that places them in the top 20% of all incoming transfer students in order to be eligible.
How much does it cost to join?
All members must pay a one time membership fee of $45.
Why should I join?
Membership in this organization is prestigious. Individuals who become members will be able to resource all of the services that the national organization has to offer, including scholarship opportunities.
Can my membership be revoked?
No - even if your grade point average falls below the membership criteria, your membership status will not be revoked as you are automatically a lifetime member.
What can I expect as a member?
As a member, you will have a chance to develop leadership skills, participate in community service, and plan both social and educational programs for incoming and current transfer students.
Scholarship Opportunities
Last year two $1,500 scholarship, one $1,000 scholarship, six $750 scholarships, and four $500 scholarships were awarded by Tau Sigma National Honor Society. Scholarships are determined by a member’s involvement in and service to the chapter, involvement in and service to the university, service to the community, and continued academic achievement.
