Why should you attend the Learning Center's workshops?
Our staff and tutors will help you attain and enhance a variety of learning skills, from reducing test anxiety to improving reading rate. More importantly, you will strengthen your study habits and problem solving techniques for continued learning achievement long after you graduate.
How often can I use a tutor for a specific subject?
You can enjoy unlimited visits to the Center.
Do I always receive 1-on-1 tutoring?
In some instances yes, especially if you are the only student using the tutor during the listed time. In writing assistance you always get one-on-one tutoring for a 45-minute session. You can use less time if necessary. If no one is waiting to get assistance you can stay with the tutor as long as necessary. If someone else is waiting, you stay until they have their time allotment and then you can receive assistance again. In the meantime you can be working on your assignment in the computer lab or in a private study room.
What subjects can I get assistance with?
Any subject that you require help with. If a tutor is not already scheduled for the subject, the director of the center will try to find one.

Hours at the Learning Center will be announced once the tutors' schedules are certain, but convenient weekly hours are guaranteed. Some tutors are willing to arrange sessions outside the regular Center hours on a case-by-case basis.
What can be done if you do not offer tutoring at the time I need it?
Speak with the director or the coordinator to see if some times can be arranged either on a temporary or permanent basis.
On-line tutoring will become available by October 1. At that time you will be able to go to a Moodle site for the LC webpage and either ask a question to be answered by a tutor when available or have a live chat with a tutor who is working at the center.
Why should I take a review course at the Learning Center before I take a graduate school exam?
Chances are the better acquainted you are with an exam format, the better you will perform on the actual exam. Practice exams also help you identify particular areas that may require extra work. The center has test preparation drills for most standardized exams including: GRE; LSAT; GMAT; and MCAT.
How much do your graduate school entrance exam preparation classes cost?
Unlike “name brand” test preparation courses, the small group sessions at the Learning Center are FREE to all Adelphi students, staff, and alumni.
The classes are free, but how much do you charge for materials?
There is no fee for materials or study packets. We also provide them free of charge!
Are your classes free because they aren't as good as the "name brand" test preparation courses? Not at all! We feel that an advantage that we have over the “name brand” courses is that we can tailor a program to your needs, and our small classes mean that we can take a more personal approach to helping you succeed. Additionally, all services provided by the Learning Center are always free for students and alumni.
Who teaches your test prep courses? Our classes are taught by Adelphi graduate students who have taken or plan to take graduate school entrance exams. Our staff members are experienced in teaching these test preparation classes.
When should I start studying for these exams? When should I take the exam? Typically, the students who do the best begin studying six to eight months in advance and take the exams the fall before they want to attend graduate school. These students spend at least four hours per week studying with our learning assistants as well as on their own. So, if you plan on enrolling in graduate school in the fall of 2007, you should take the exam in the fall of 2008.
What if I can't make every session at the Learning Center? Try to construct your schedule as best you can. If you can come twice a week, that’s fine. If you can only come once a week, that’s OK too. All we ask is that you set up a work schedule with the learning assistant.
