Joining a Fraternity, Sorority, or a Social Fellowship |
Membership in a Greek-letter organization or social fellowship offers students unique opportunities for campus involvement, scholarship, leadership, and networking/socializing. Like your studies, the amount of time and effort you put into your fraternity or sorority will be what you get out of it. Membership in a Greek-letter organization is a privilege and a life-long commitment.
Eligibility to participate in recruitment requires:
- a minimum of a 2.35 GPA (some organizations may require a higher GPA)
- a successful completion of at least 12 credits. Freshmen are not eligible for membership until their second semester at Adelphi.
- submission of a completed recruitment/intake application form available in the Center for Student Involvement, UC 110, prior to recruitment.

Campus Involvement & Leadership
Members of the Greek Community are leaders on campus. The network of Greeks on campus helps foster a strong sense of community and pride among fraternity men and sorority women. Events such as Homecoming/Family Weekend, Greek Sing, Greek Week and intramural sports offer Greeks a host of opportunities for the social interaction that is so crucial to the overall college experience. The Greek community at Adelphi is a constant opportunity to make new friends and try new experiences. Members of the Adelphi Greek community are leaders throughout campus and student organizations. Involvement in fraternities and sororities provides students with unique opportunities to develop leadership skills such as time management, team work, networking, meeting procedures, recruitment, delegation, and budgeting. These skills will continue to benefit students long after they graduate.
The Order of Omega is a national Greek honor society for leadership. The Adelphi University chapter recognizes members of fraternities and sororities who have obtained a high standard of scholarship and have exemplified exceptional leadership in Greek and campus activities.

Academic Excellence & Scholarship
In addition to promoting campus and community involvement, one of the main purposes of Greek-letter organizations is to promote academic excellence. Members of fraternities and sororities have the opportunity to join national honor societies specifically for members of fraternities and sororities.
Gamma Sigma Alpha is a national Greek academic honor society. The Alpha Alpha chapter at Adelphi University recognizes those students who have obtained a minimum GPA of 3.5 in their junior/senior year. Most chapters offer their own recognition programs for their members and encourage/support academic achievement.

Philanthropy & Service
Members of fraternities and sororities are involved in a variety of philanthropic and community service events. Greeks pride themselves in their active role in many local and national charities. Such involvement by students not only benefits the community-at-large, but likewise teaches students the value and importance of becoming ethical individuals and responsible members of society.
