Q: How do I request assistance?
A: Reasonable accommodations and academic assistance are provided to students with disabilities who have registered with the Office of Disability Support Services (DSS). Accommodations are individually determined according to documented need. You must contact DSS and complete the Petition for Accommodations (PDF 130.7KB) and Consent for Release of Information (PDF 112.3KB) forms.

You should discuss reasonable accommodations with DSS as soon as possible following your decision to enroll at Adelphi.

Q: What documentation is required?

Q: What services are provided?
A: Examples of reasonable accommodations include:
  • extended-time testing

  • enlarged-print textbooks
  • sign language interpreters for students who are deaf or hard of hearing
  • classroom relocation
  • accessible classroom seating
  • modified residence hall facilities
  • handicapped parking permits.
In addition, assistive technology for students with disabilities is available in the Assistive Technology Lab located in University Center Room 310, and in Swirbul Library.

While the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 requires that priority consideration be given to the specific methods requested by the students, it does not imply that a particular accommodation must be granted if it is deemed not reasonable and other suitable techniques are available. Where such recommendations are congruent with the programs, services, and benefits offered by Adelphi University, they will be given deference. When recommendations go beyond services and benefits that can be provided by the University, they may be used to suggest potential referrals to area service providers beyond Adelphi.
