Insurance Requirements for 2013-2014

Attention Residential and International Students for 2013-2014:
Health Insurance is mandatory for all residential and international students. The school will automatically place these students on a pre-selected policy. If a student has comparable coverage they may apply for a waiver during the waiver period only. The federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) now requires that a minimum policy limit of $500,000 be in place (compared to last year's policy limit of $100,000), as well as provisions for preventative care. Due to the increase in benefits being offered, the premium has increased also. Please note that the entire insurance fee collected by the University is remitted to the insurance provider.

Remember that Adelphi requires all residential students and all international students to have health insurance. Adelphi will automatically enroll you in the University policy if you fall into either of these two categories.

If you have comparable coverage and do not wish to remain enrolled in this plan, you may apply for a waiver of this fee online after Jauary 1, 2014.

The waiver period ends on March 15, 2014 with no exceptions.

International students please note: If you apply for a waiver, and your current insurance company does not offer a U.S. phone number, you are required to fax the statement of policy limits to AIG, Educational Markets for proof of coverage with a cover sheet including the following information clearly printed: First and Last Name, Address, Date of Birth, Student ID Number, Phone Number and indicate that you are a student of Adelphi University. Please send this information to the following fax 843.667.9712. Keep in mind the Health Services Center can not fax this information for you, you are responsible for doing this yourself.

The university is looking for students to have a minimum of $500,000 basic coverage as well as the required Repatriation of $7,500 and $10,000 for Medical Evacuation.

Deadlines

  • October 15 for the fall semester
  • March 15 for the spring semester (only new students may waive during this period).
If you are a commuter student who wishes to enroll in the school insurance plan, please go to studentinsurance.com/Schools/NY/ADELPHI/ for information on how to do this.  You must be register for a minimum of 1 credit per semester to qualify for the school insurance.

Please note: Residential/International students—if you do not complete the online waiver by the deadlines as listed above you will automatically be enrolled in the Student Insurance Plan and be charged the annual premium: 
  • Fall — $1,336 (coverage effective August 15–August 15 of the following year)
  • Spring — $802  (for newly enrolled students in spring semester only)
