The role of the Office of International Student Services (OISS) is to assist students and scholars with their non immigrant status. The OISS helps international students and scholars deal with the academic and social challenges of studying in the United States at Adelphi University, while providing the appropriate immigration guidance and regulatory information.
The services the office assists students with include: Form I-20 and DS-2019 information, visa guidance, change of non immigrant status, employment authorization, travel guidelines and procedures, reinstatement applications, school transfers, extension of stay, social security information, IRS tax information, and general student services. The OISS assists students in meeting the legal requirements required by the Department of Homeland Security in order to maintain their F and J status.
The OISS serves as the liaison between the student and the Department of Homeland Security as well as the liaison between the student and the Administration. Through orientation sessions, workshops and programs, routine email updates and general advising responsibilities, International Students at Adelphi will learn the proper procedures and policies of maintaining status while being introduced to the culture and customs of the United States. The office with the assistance of the Center for Student Involvement also provides social programming, clubs and organizations to assist the student with their needs.
The office also offers practical assistance with matters such as housing accommodations, setting up a bank account, transportation information and culture shock information.
