Adelphi in the Bahamas: Coral Reefs and Tropical Shores
Adelphi in the Bahamas is an intensive, three- credit intersession course held in San Salvador, the Bahamas.
Extensive field investigations, supplemented by classroom lectures, provide a practical and theoretical introduction to the ecology and geology of tropical systems.
Days are spent in the field, investigating patch, fringe and barrier reefs, mangrove- dominated tidal creek, turtle grass environments, and caves, and comparing the modern systems to an ancient (125,000 year old) reef formed when sea level was 6 m higher than present. Evenings are spent in classroom and laboratory study, with a strong emphasis on environmental issues.
Community service and exposure to the cultural history of the island are integral parts of the course.
The course will be offered again next winter session, for 10 days in early January. Exact dates will be announced soon.

Samuel Johnson wrote that "by seeing London, I have seen as much of life as the world can show. " From its earliest beginnings as a Roman outpost, through its formative years as a headquarters for Viking and Norman invaders, to its emergence as the capital of the greatest maritime empire the world has ever known, London has been a city at the crossroads of civilization. In January 2008, Adelphi in Britain will explore the rich history and exciting contemporary culture of London in a three-credit interdisciplinary course that combines theater, museum visits, lectures, and excursions aimed at exposing students to this remarkable city.

The course coordinator is Adam McKeown, assistant professor of English specializing in Shakespeare and the English Renaissance. Together, the accomplished faculty of this program bring years of study abroad experience and a wealth of knowledge in the literary and cultural history of England as well as expertise in its modern art and theater scenes.
