Q: Where can I find a job?
A: Different regulations apply for on-campus and off-campus employment.

On-Campus Employment:
Student employment opportunities are posted at the Center for Career Development located in Post Hall.

As a full-time student with an F-1 visa, you do not need to obtain additional approval from the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) for on-campus employment. Your form I-20 which authorizes you to attend Adelphi also allows you to work on-campus. However, you must receive approval from the Office of International Student Services prior to working. You must be enrolled in a full course of study (minimum of 12 credits for undergraduate and 9 credits for graduate study) and be in good academic standing.

---
Q: Can I work off-campus?
A: If you have an F-1 visa, you must apply for authorization to work off-campus prior to beginning any employment. An Employment Authorization Document (EAD) will be granted only if you can prove severe economic hardship. You must be enrolled for one full academic year and be in good economic standing. Employment authorization is automatically terminated if you cease to maintain lawful status. Please see below for off campus employment options.
  • Severe Economic Hardship Employment
    • A student may be authorized for off campus employment under the following circumstances:
      • Severe, unforeseen economic necessity
      • Must have maintained F-1 status for at least one academic year
      • Application procedure through U.S.C.I.S.
      • Please contact OISS for more information
      • Application fee is required

  • Special Student Relief Program Employment

  • International Organization Sponsored Employment
    • This F-1 employment benefit allows F-1 students to work for a recognized international organization within the meaning of the International Organization Act.
    • Application procedure though U.S.C.I.S.
    • Please contact OISS for more information
    • Application fee is required

  • Curricular Practical Training

Q: How can I get a Social Security Number?
A: You must apply for a Social Security Number after you have secured on-campus employment or off-campus employment with U.S.C.I.S. authorization.

In addition to the application, you will need a letter from the OISS certifying that you have found employment on-campus, job offer letter from work supervisor, passport, I-94 and I-20. If you have secured off-campus work, you will be required to show the USCIS Employment Authorization Document (EAD Card).

Students need to obtain a Social Security Number prior to beginning work.

---
Q: What is full-time status?
A: The Department of Homeland Security requires that you maintain full-time study during the academic year, September through May. Enrollment is not required over the summer months. Undergraduates must be enrolled for 12 credits and graduates for nine credits to be considered full-time students at Adelphi.

Adelphi University may be required to notify the Department of Homeland Security if you are not enrolled full time or when you cease to maintain full-time status. If extenuating circumstances prevent you from meeting the above requirements, you must notify your International Student Advisor before dropping below the minimum credit requirement. In some instances, it may be possible to obtain a letter from a doctor or academic advisor certifying that the credits are to be considered full time.

Authorization to take less than a full course of study can only be granted by your International Student Advisor.

---
Q: How do I renew my passport?
A: Passports can be renewed in your country's embassy or consulate. Most consulates are located in New York City. We suggest that you keep a copy of the number or first pages of your passport, in the event it is lost or stolen. This information will expedite the re-issuance of the passport.

It is your obligation to keep your passport valid at all times.

For passport renewal, your embassy or consulate may need a letter verifying that you are a full-time student. You should request such a letter from the Office of International Student Services and the Registrar.

---
Q: My visa is expiring. Where do I apply for a new one?
A: If your visa has expired and you plan to travel outside the U.S., or if you have changed your visa status while in the U.S., you will need to obtain a new visa at an American embassy or consulate abroad. It is preferable to do this in your home country or in the country you are visiting. In the latter case, be aware that there is generally a waiting period until they receive documentation from the embassy or consulate that issued your first visa.

You must have an endorsed I-20 form. A letter from the International Student Advisor certifying your full-time status is also helpful.

It is not possible to validate your visa while you are in the U.S.

---
Q: How do I open up a bank account?
A: During the first week of the semester, local banks come to campus to open accounts for students. There are several banks located near the campus, including the Bank of New York, Chase, The State Bank of Long Island, and Citibank. You will need to show a passport and I-20 together with an Adelphi Student ID card to open an account. A letter from the OISS certifying your address is also recommended.

---
Q: How can my parents transfer funds to pay my bill?
A: To transfer money to Adelphi University directly:

Commerce Bank, N.A.
855 Franklin Avenue
Garden City, NY 11530
Adelphi University's Account Number is 7918965661.
The Routing Number is ABA #026013673.

Please include your name and Student ID number.

---
Q: How do I get a driver's license?
A: You need to apply to the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) located at 801 Axinn Street, Garden City, New York 11530. At the time of your visit, you will be required to present your passport, your I-20 Form, your I-94 Form, social security card, proof of address such as a credit card bill or utility bill, and letter from the OISS certifying your status.

You will need to take a written test covering the rules of driving in the New York State. After passing this test, you will receive a learner's permit, which will allow you to drive during daylight hours with a person who has a valid New York State driver's license seated next to you. You are required to complete a five-hour course at a licensed driving school before applying for your road test to get a permanent license.

---
Q: Why do I need health insurance?
A: The United States does not have national health care. Doctor's fees, hospitalization, laboratory fees, and medication are your responsibility and can be expensive. Adelphi requires that all international students be covered by accident and health insurance, whether you live on- or off-campus. You will automatically be billed for the University Health Insurance Policy, unless you show proof of your own health care insurance. The current rate is $385.00, subject to change.
