Important Information You Need to Know Before Applying
Orientation is designed to welcome and introduce all entering students and their families to Adelphi University. The goals of Orientation are:
- To prepare students for academic life at Adelphi.
- To foster new friendships among incoming students.
- To help new students explore the campus and its vast array of resources.
- To familiarize new students with relevant policies and regulations.
- To help students learn about activities, campus life, and leadership opportunities.
- To help students feel more comfortable starting their academic careers at Adelphi.
The Division of Student Affairs will select a group of mature and dedicated undergraduate leaders to assist with implementing Orientation programs this summer. An Orientation Leader serves as a resource for new students who are making the transition from their previous environment to the diverse academic, intellectual and social culture of the University. Orientation Leaders are expected to possess a specific body of knowledge about the University acquired through training and experience, and they must be genuinely interested and skillful in sharing this information with Orientation participants. Selection to the team of Orientation Leaders is a unique honor and a rewarding opportunity for personal and professional growth.
Qualifications:
- Exhibited leadership experience and potential for growth.
- Good academic standing, with a minimum grade point average of 2.5.
- Good judicial standing with no current serious judicial sanctions.
- Knowledge of, and commitment to, the mission of Orientation.
- Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of team members, students and parents.
- Demonstrated desire to learn about the University community, programs, policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated record of flexibility, responsibility and willingness to assist others.
Roles and Responsibilities:
As representatives of Adelphi University, Orientation Leaders (OLs) have many roles and responsibilities. OLs are expected to have the interpersonal skills necessary for dealing with new students and parents, both individually and in groups. They must be friendly, outgoing and articulate. While potentially being a friend and mentor to new students, OLs will also communicate and uphold Adelphi University policies and any special rules or guidelines which might apply specifically to the Orientation program. They will be expected to confront any students whose conduct is deemed inappropriate and/or infringing upon the rights of others. OLs should serve as positive role models in all they do.
In addition, Orientation Leaders will:
- Attend and participate in all training sessions during the spring and summer.
- Supervise activity while living among new students attending Orientation sessions.
- Serve as positive representatives of the University to new students and their parents.
- Facilitate new students' introduction to the University by maintaining an open, helpful attitude, and using effective communication techniques.
- Promote interaction among new students during small group discussions, icebreakers, meals and evening activities.
- Answer students' and parents' questions about social and/or academic aspects of University life.
- Facilitate small group interactions on various topics at Orientation.
- Facilitate small group activities for new students through direct involvement and participation.
- Work closely and in cooperation with other Orientation Leaders and Orientation staff to develop, prepare, implement and evaluate the Orientation programs.
- Work with the Center for Student Involvement staff to assist with, and support, all aspects of the Orientation program, including move-in day.
- Provide administrative support for the program, including preparation of Orientation materials.
Additional Terms and Conditions:
Orientation Leaders must be registered, full-time students for the Spring 2008 semester, and they must remain in good academic and disciplinary standing.
Orientation Leaders must be present and on time without exception for all scheduled training sessions and work assignments. The period of work during the summer will run from June 29 through July 17 (excluding July 3-6 holiday period), and will include Matriculation Day on August 22.
Orientation Leaders will remain in residence in the specific facilities provided during the Orientation program and may not accept additional employment of any kind during July Orientation training and sessions, or the August Matriculation Day.
If all requirements are met, Orientation Leaders will receive a one-time stipend of $500 for their work. If vital components of the role of Orientation Leader are not met, the Center for Student Involvement has the authority to impose sanctions for failure to meet these requirements which may include withholding part or all of the Orientation Leader stipend, or termination as an Orientation Leader.
The implementation of these sanctions is at the discretion of the Center for Student Involvement staff. Orientation Leaders who fail to meet the requirements of this program will receive a warning prior to implementation of these sanctions unless the Orientation Leader commits a serious violation, in which case termination may be immediate.
