Students getting information
Q: What if I have problems with a roommate?
A: Ask your Resident Assistant (RA) or Resident Hall Director for advice.

---
Q: How can I estimate the expenses I will incur for the upcoming academic year?
A: The Office of Student Financial Services offers online assistance to help you estimate your expenses. See Tuition and Fees for a list of the current costs.

---
Q: When do I pay the University for tuition and fees?
A: The schedule is available from the Office of Student Financial Services. See Payment and Refund Policies for payment schedules and information on the different payment plans.

---
Q: Should students bring a computer to campus with them?
A: A personal computer is not a requirement. However, most students bring a computer since it facilitates their work and provides access to the Internet. Adelphi has negotiated discounts with some vendors for students interested in purchasing a computer. See Computer Purchasing Services for more information.

Adelphi provides computing facilities for students. They are located in the Information Commons in Swirbul Library.

---
Q: How do I acquire an email account at the University?
A: An application for an email account is included in the New Student Notebook. When you register for the fall semester, submit the completed form to Customer Services in Swirbul Library. If you did not receive an application, you can pick one up at Customer Services.

---
Q: What services does Adelphi provide for students with disabilities?
A: Adelphi University is dedicated to serving the needs of its students with disabilities. The Office of Disability Support Services provides a range of services. Call 516.877.3145 for more information or to arrange any special accommodations that you may require.

---
Q: How do parents change their mailing address with the University to ensure receipt of necessary mail?
A: Students must make the necessary changes by completing a form at the Office of the University Registrar. Parents do not change their mailing address.

---
Q: Is it possible for a student to have the different addresses of his/her two parents listed so each parent can receive information?
A: The Office of the University Registrar maintains a PGS (parent/guardian/spouse) address but only if (a) the student provides it or (b) the student changes it. Since only one PGS address is maintained, it is not possible for a student to have information sent to two different addresses.

---
Q: How does the University know my campus address?
A: The Office of Residential Life and Housing creates and maintains your campus address which is part of the student record.

---
Q: Where will my grades be sent?
A: It depends on the timing of the grade report. First reports are sent to the permanent address since the term has already ended. Notify the Registrar if you want subsequent reports to be mailed to a local address. Once the new term has begun, you can access your grades over the telephone by calling 516.877.3829 or online using C.L.A.S.S.

---
Q: Where can I buy books?
A: The Adelphi University Bookstore, located in the lower level of the University Center, is a full-service bookstore stocked with required course books (new and used). The bookstore also carries magazines, journals, trade paperbacks, clothing, stationery, and other items to meet the personal needs of students.

---
Q: What is an internship?
A: An internship is any carefully monitored work or service experience in which an individual has intentional learning goals and reflects actively on what is learned throughout the experience. Some internships are paid, while others offer credit only. Some may provide a stipend covering your expenses, such as travel and meals. Internships can vary in duration from the typical two months to a few years.

Internships offer several benefits. They can help you decide if the field you are considering is right for you. They provide you with invaluable experience to include on your résumé and can result in a job offer with the organization.

Internship listings are posted in the Career Library in the Center for Career Development in Post Hall. While you may participate in internships at any point at any point during your education, your sophomore or junior years are considered ideal. You will still have time to direct or change your course of study based on your internship experience. However, you are encouraged to explore the internships as soon as possible to ensure that you find one that matches your interests. Some students even manage to have more than one internship.

Call 516.877.3130 or visit the Center for Career Development for more information.

---
Q: When should I first visit the Center for Career Development?
A: As soon as possible—the services are appropriate for all college students, starting in freshman year. Many students make the mistake of thinking they don't need to visit the Center for Career Development until their senior year or upon graduation. If you are unsure of what you want to do, you should make an appointment with a career counselor to learn about the Center's resources and to set up a four-year career plan.

The Center offers individual career counseling to assist you in areas such as deciding on a major, choosing a career, career exploration, self-assessment, and decision-making. The trained staff can also help you develop your résumé, prepare for an interview, find an internship, and obtain a job—on-campus, part-time, or full-time work. Call 516.877.3130 for an appointment.

Located in Post Hall, the Center offers a variety of workshops throughout the year. The schedule appears in the Center newsletter and on their Web site.

---
Q: Should I work while in college?
A: You should consider several factors before making a decision. You need to examine your financial need, credit obligations, involvement in cocurricular activities, and family responsibilities. Keep in mind that being a full-time student is a full-time endeavor. A full load of 12-18 credits requires about 48-54 hours a week between class work and homework. However, if you must work, an on-campus job is preferable. Check the postings at the Center for Career Development in Post Hall.

---
Q: How safe is campus?
A: Adelphi University has long been committed to maintaining a comprehensive safety and crime prevention program for our students, faculty, and staff. With the assistance of the entire Adelphi community and the cooperation of the Garden City Police Department, this program has contributed to what we believe is an excellent record of safety. Although Garden City remains one of the safest neighborhoods on Long Island, and Adelphi one of the safest campuses in the country, we remain as determined as ever to ensure the safety of the community.

---
Q: How can I find out more about Public Safety?
A: Colleges and universities are required by the federal government to publish and distribute an annual security report containing campus security policies, procedures, programs as well as campus crime statistics. The Annual Public Safety Report can be obtained by visiting the Department of Public Safety and Transportation Web site.
