Apply to be an Orientation Leader

Freshman Orientation Leaders
Orientation Leaders (OLs) play an integral role in helping students transition to college life. They introduce new students to the campus and guide them through the myriad academic, social, and athletic opportunities at Adelphi.

As representatives of the University, they serve as positive role models for new students. They offer friendly assistance and answer questions from students and their parents. They communicate Adelphi's mission, policies, and procedures and ensure appropriate conduct among students.

The OLs gain invaluable personal and professional experience. Their roles and responsibilities include:

  • attending and participating in all training sessions during the spring and summer
  • supervising activity while living among new students attending Orientation sessions
  • promoting interaction among new students during small group discussions, icebreakers, meals, and social activities
  • coordinating with other OLs and the Orientation staff to develop, implement, and evaluate the Orientation programs
  • working with the Director and Assistant Director to support all aspects of the program, including move-in day
  • providing administrative support for the program.

OLs are expected to remain in residence in the specific facilities provided during the Orientation program.

Click here for application information or to apply online. Applications are distributed through the Center for Student Involvement, located in University Center room 110.

Only a select number of students are accepted as OLs. They must be returning, full-time students for the fall semester, and they must remain in satisfactory academic and disciplinary standing for the spring semester.

To be considered, students must meet the following criteria:

  • excellent leadership potential and experience
  • good academic standing, with a minimum grade point average of 2.5
  • good judicial standing with no current judicial sanctions
  • commitment to the mission of Orientation
  • demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills
  • ability to work effectively with a diverse group of team members, students, and parents
  • desire to learn about all aspects of the University life, from academic studies to policy and procedures
  • demonstrated record of flexibility, responsibility, and willingness to assist others.

In addition, OLs must be present and on time without exception for all scheduled training sessions and work assignments. There will be mandatory training sessions during the spring semester on Tuesday evenings.

OLs may not accept additional employment of any kind during Orientation training in July or during the program. OLs will be remunerated as follows:

  • small stipend, subject to required payroll deductions
  • housing during the Orientation program
  • breakfast, lunch, and dinner during Orientation training and throughout the program
  • three Orientation Leader T-shirts.
