| Faculty are in a unique position to recognize certain behavior that may indicate students are experiencing distress or problems that require professional attention. The Student Counseling Center (SCC) has developed a referral guide which helps faculty recognize the signs and provides guidelines they should follow when dealing with students who exhibit these behaviors.
While a certain amount of stress is normal for students dealing with the challenges of college, it is not uncommon for major mental illnesses or their related symptoms to first appear in the late teens or early twenties. Of course it is not possible to identify every student in distress nor will every student willingly accept assistance. However, faculty members are encouraged to direct the student to the SCC for evaluation and help.
