The Ruth S. Harley University Center is the cultural and social hub of the Adelphi University campus. Dedicated in 1972, the University Center (U.C.) is named in honor of Ruth Stratton Harley (1902-2005), dean emerita, who retired in 1970 after 51 years of service to Adelphi University.
Its striking exterior represents a distinct departure from conventional institutional design. The building houses administrative offices, student organizations, lounges, and dining and conference facilities.
The University Center Art Gallery, Dean of Student Affairs, PantherTainment Booth, Center for Student Involvement, Atrium Lounge, University Center Café, and an ATM are located on the main level. The cafeteria's spacious dining room opens onto an outdoor patio.
The second level is the primary activity area of the University Center. It features a grand ballroom which functions as a 700-seat auditorium or can be subdivided into three smaller rooms.
There are also lounges and seven multipurpose meeting rooms that can be reserved for events. In addition, the Athletic Hall of Fame is located between rooms 202 and 203.
Several student organizations are located on the third floor including the Oracle yearbook, the Student Government Association, the Student Activities Board, Disability Support Services, the Student Counseling Center and The Delphian student newspaper.
Several administrative offices and the Interfaith Center and Chapel are also located on this level.
The Barnes & Noble Bookstore is located on the lower level, along with the Fireplace Lounge, Underground Café, and postal stamp machine. The Commuter Student lounge provides lockers and computers with fast Internet access.
