Adelphi’s Student Government Association (SGA) acts on behalf of the undergraduate student body through communication with the administration, staff and faculty on matters of student concern. This year, SGA, its Executive Cabinet and Student Senate are working extra hard to improve student life on campus. Here’s what they’ve been up to:.

  • Before the start of the fall semester, the Executive Cabinet amended the constitution that governs the association to implement stronger communication lines between the SGA Student Senate and the student organizations and student leaders of Adelphi’s campus. Senators are now assigned to serve as liaisons to any SGA recognized student organization to keep them in the loop about policy changes, events and other items of importance.
  • At the beginning of the fall semester, the Student Government Association hosted its annual fall leadership retreat, where the Executive Cabinet worked with student organizations to find opportunities to collaborate and learn how to help their organizations succeed.
  • SGA held two town halls, where students discussed such topics as cultural food options on campus and the renovation of the Ruth S. Harley University Center, and Associate Dean of Student Affairs Della Hudson presented on food insecurity on college campuses and the success of the Panther Pantry. Also the Green Committee was formed under SGA to focus on campus sustainability efforts and SGA voted to contribute funding to ensure the pantry would continue to be a resource for the student body.
  • To build awareness of SGA and its work, the logo was updated, Tuesday Student Senate meetings were publicized, and free spirit shirts were given out during Spirit Week and Adelphi Spirit Weekend. You can see often see these shirts around campus on #AUWearItWednesdays.
  • To improve student health and wellness, SGA sponsored weekly massages to help students de-stress and get some well-deserved time to take care of themselves.
  • SGA provided two students with full scholarships to participate in the alternative winter break trip to Puerto Rico with the Center for Student Involvement (CSI) and also significantly reduced the price for the other students participating in the trip. SGA is also subsidizing the upcoming alternative spring break to Peru and sponsored two students to attend the trip at no cost.

SGA is excited about continuing to improve campus life. Students are invited to attend SGA meetings Tuesdays at 6:00 p.m. Check MyAULife for locations.

Jillian Hershman is a junior psychology major in the STEP program. This is her third year in SGA. Prior to becoming president, she served on the Student Senate as the vice president of administration and as a student ambassador. She’s also a resident assistant in Residence Hall B, a student worker in the Office of University Admissions, a peer assistant leader and a member of Greek life.
